Correction, Mr. Mahaney

Yesterday, Sovereign Grace Ministries president C.J. Mahaney posted an interview of elder Christian statesman Os Guinness on the View From The Cheap Seats blog at the Sovereign Grace Ministries web site.

The interview explored faith, doubt, and unbelief, which were the topics of Mr. Guinness' 1976 IVP book In Two Minds: The Dilemma of Doubt and How to Solve It. Faith, doubt, unbelief, certainty and assurance are all important subjects to consider in an age where a segment of the Church seems to see doubt and unbelief as cardinal virtues essential to the Christian life.

Since Discerning Reader has not yet reviewed In Two Minds, and so cannot assist buyers in that way, I thought it might be helpful to correct Mr. Mahaney on his assertion that the book is out of print - it isn't!

In 1996, Crossway Books reprinted it under the title God in the Dark: The Assurance of Faith Beyond a Shadow of Doubt. That is one clever title, in my opinion, between the play on the title of the C.S. Lewis book God in the Dock and the hat tip to the idiomatic phrase "beyond a shadow of a doubt." Good on ya, Crossway editors circa 1996.

My glee over the title of the book aside, Guinness' book provides what one Amazon reviewer calls "a thorough examination of the phenomenology of doubt" unparalleled in contemporary Christian writing.

And if you doubt my word on it, just ask C.J.

Update: The very moment I posted this, someone (Tony Reinke, I think - the exclamation mark gives him away) updated C.J.'s blog. Now the thousands who read C.J.'s blog will know, not just the tens who read this one!
