Brian D. McLaren, born in 1956, graduated from University of Maryland with degrees in English (BA, summa cum laude, 1978, and MA, GPA 4.0, 1981). His academic interests included Medieval drama, Romantic poets, modern philosophical literature, and the novels of Dr. Walker Percy. In 1986 he became founding pastor of Cedar Ridge Community Church, an innovative, nondenominational church in the Baltimore-Washington region.
McLaren is acknowledged as being the unofficial and most prominent leader of the Emergent Church (also known as the Emerging Church) movement. His books include The Church on the Other Side, Finding Faith, A New Kind of Christian, More Ready Than You Realize and A Generous Orthodoxy.
