This week we have a full slate of six new reviews for you.
Amongst the reviews, which cover a variety of topics from six different publishers, are two heavy-hitters in Guard Us, Guide Us by J.I. Packer and Walking With God by John Eldredge. Both books take on the subject of guidance in the Christian life, but only one of them does the subject biblical justice.
Apart from his review of the Eldredge book, our Founding Editor Tim Challies also produced a review of Why We're Not Emergent by Kevin DeYoung and Ted Kluck, two young pastors who possess insights into the Emergent movement by virtue of their age and inclinations, but have opted to remain with mainline denominations. Tim commends this book to those who "have been searching for a book that will help you to understand the emerging church or if you have been seeking to answer a friend’s question “What is the emerging church?"
Besides his review of the Packer book (co-authored with Carolyn Nystrom), Scott Lamb also offers a review of Dan Doriani's Reformed Expository Commentary on James, which Scott says is at its best when applying "the timeless message of Scripture...to the heart of contemporary life." Rounding out what is an industrious week by any measure, Scott also reviews 40 Questions about Elders and Deacons by his fellow Southern seminarian Ben Merkle, a reference book about the two biblical offices that doesn't shy away from the controversial questions.
Finally (whew!), in an effort to find the most user-friendly and solidly doctrinal theology primer, I (Mark Tubbs) have hit upon Peter Jeffery's Bitesize Theology, which I bill as a gospel-centered resource for both the young Christian and the seasoned believer.
